There is a lot of water around Barrow Lodge at the moment. The River Barrow is at an all time high and we are all on flood alert. Carlow Town Council’s outdoor staff, Civil Defence and the ESB have, as always really looked after us. Barrow Lodge is built on a slight incline so thankfully the water does not go into our house and we will be open for business as usual on Friday. Unfortunately our neighbours, Carlow Rowing Club, Dicey Reilly’s Pub and several apartments on The Quay, John Street and Centaur Street have not been as lucky and they are submerged in 3-4 feet of water. It looks like the streets in our area are going to be under water for some time. Luckily in this part of Carlow we have great neighbours and friends and we all support one another in times of need. On another note, with the exception of Wayne Fennell and Jennifer Murine O’Connor our local politicians haven’t been seen or heard of.

Great View from Barrow Lodge

When I answer e mail reservation enquiries I generally say we have a great scenic location here in Barrow Lodge. Well I am not lying! here is the proof! This is a view from room 26 in our Bed and Breakfast. Our house overlooks the River Barrow and is situated in the centre of Carlow Town. The building you can see on right hand middle of the photograph is Carlow Rowing Club and the right hand top building is the Riverdell Complex which houses the Grill and Grape Restaurant on the ground floor. This view is one we look at every day and we like it so much we have had it printed on the our new business cards.

The recession is over here in Barrow lodge.
Here in Barrow Lodge we have decided the recession is over. We have had our share of doom and gloom for the past couple of months and we didn’t like it. Well now all that is finished. Summer is on the way, the sun is shining and all is well in our little world again. We are still continuing with our price reduction of 70 euro for a double room inclusive of breakfast, but the RECESSION IS OVER, THANK GOD. We are now in a pre boom period and hopefully we will have a bumper summer season.

Punchestown Races and Barrow Lodge
Horse racing enthusiasts like to use Barrow Lodge as an accommodation base for the Punchestown, Curragh and Gowran Meetings. They love to leave the heavy traffic, and overflowing pubs and restaurants of Counties Kildare and Kilkenny behind them and enjoy Carlow hospitality. After parking up and checking into Barrow Lodge there is nothing nicer than a nice short stroll to one of Carlow’s excellent restaurants to enjoy a succulent steak, beef or salmon (no pun intended) and a couple of pints of Guinness. The seasoned racegoer also knows there is nowhere better to get great racing tips than in Bradley’s Pub in Graiguecullen, which is a stones throw from Barrow Lodge.

Writers Block……..Facebook
Now I know what it is like to have writers block. This has never happened to me before. My memory has just gone blank. I usually have a couple of things to write about and use a simple process of elimination to decide which items to write about or not. As I cannot think of anything else to blog about I think I will write about Facebook. Now this is going to be difficult because I know very little about Facebook. Actually that is a lie, I know nothing about Facebook. Sunday morning while I was waiting on my Bed and Breakfast guests to come to breakfast, I googled my daughter’s name and up came her facebook page with a picture of herself and her friend. It was a very unflattering ‘photo of both of them as they were pulling faces, so this morning I told her she should only put ’nice’ ’photos of herself on Facebook. She looked at me strangely (she often does this) and said I couldn’t have seen her on Facebook. I could swear I did. This leads to lots of questions from me. What is Facebook? What is Twitter and Twittering? Am I being left behind? I’m still only coming to terms with blogging. Where will all this end? and will I be able to keep up?

Birds and Barrow Lodge Carlow
By birds I mean the small feathered variety! Barrow Lodge is situated on the banks of the River Barrow in the centre of Carlow Town. I used to see lots of small birds in our garden. Last winter George had a very worrying close relationship with a robin. It was the first thing he spoke to every morning. At the moment we have ducks mating in the front garden and a ducks nest on our front boundary wall. There is also an abundance of swans on the River Barrow which flows past our house, however the back garden is a bird free zone. We recently moved a large sculpture of a bird of prey called Morrigan, by John Behan, which used to take pride of place in our living room, tothe centre of our back garden. We think this may be scaring the smaller birds away. Incidentally John Behan also sculpted the Liberty Tree at Kennedy Avenue Carlow and my favourite Behan sculpture is the one outside the United Nations Building in New York.
