Well it’s that time of the year again.  Snowdrop Week in Altamont Gardens! 

 Here at Barrow Lodge Bed and Breakfast, Carlow Town we are redecorating our bedrooms but yesterday George and myself took a sneaky afternoon off and headed for Altamont Gardens near Tullow.  One of the great things about Altamont Gardens is that no matter what season you go, there is always something different to be seen.  Yesterday we were a little early for Snowdrop Week  so we missed the guided tour with the head gardener which would have been very interesting, especially to George who is keen on gardening.  We made our way around the garden, the lake, the walled garden etc, admiring the carpets of snowdrops etc.  We enjoyed our walk around Altamont so much that next week we have decided to take another afternoon off and catch that guided tour with  Paul Cutler, the head gardener.

The Holiday Season is over at Barrow Lodge Carlow

We’re just back from our annual ’Summer Holidays’ I know..its only January, but we have to take our hols. off season, so we were on our Summer 2009 holidays!   George and myself went to Beijing, China for 8 days, and despite the snow and low temperatures there we had a great time.

Christmas in Barrow Lodge

Here at Barrow Lodge we are well on the way to a great Christmas.  Today we put our christmas decorations and tree and our home looks very festive.  Dani and Rosie will not be home until Christmas Eve so the festivities will start  then.  We usually meet our friends in Carlow Rowing Club early on Christmas Eve and then go to Midnight Mass in Carlow Cathedral at 12 o’clock.  Christmas morning we, and half the population of Carlow, always watch the Charity Swim on the River Barrow and this year there is also a Row In for charity which will be interesting.  After all that exertion usually some of our customers and friends join us for drinks in Barrow Lodge, then we have a leisurely late lunch and play cards and watch tv. for the evening.  To any of our customers and friends who may read this – Have a great Christmas and New Year – may it bring you happiness in each and every way.

Flooding in Carlow.

There is a lot of water around Barrow Lodge at the moment.  The River Barrow is at an all time high and we are all on flood alert.  Carlow Town Council’s outdoor staff, Civil Defence and the ESB have, as always really looked after us.  Barrow Lodge is built on a slight incline so thankfully the water does not go into our house and we will be open for business as usual on Friday.  Unfortunately our neighbours, Carlow Rowing Club, Dicey Reilly’s Pub and several apartments on The Quay, John Street and Centaur Street have not been as lucky and they are submerged in 3-4 feet of water.  It looks like the streets in our area are going to be under water  for some time.  Luckily in this part of Carlow we have great neighbours and friends and we all support one another in  times of need.  On another note, with the exception of Wayne Fennell and Jennifer Murine O’Connor our local politicians haven’t been seen or heard of.

Barrow Lodge is very lucky to be situated in Carlow Town.  We are delighted  with the recent opening of our great new Visual Centre for Contemporary Art & the George Bernard Shaw Theatre which are just a short walk from Barrow Lodge. Great View from Barrow Lodge

When I answer e mail reservation enquiries I generally say we have a great scenic location here in Barrow Lodge.   Well I am not lying! here is the proof!  This is a view from room 26 in our Bed and Breakfast.  Our house overlooks the River Barrow and is situated in the centre of Carlow Town.  The building you can see on right hand middle of the photograph is Carlow Rowing Club and the right hand top building is the Riverdell Complex which houses the Grill and Grape Restaurant on the ground floor.  This view is one we  look at every day and we like it so much we have had it printed on the our new business cards.

Eigse Arts Festival and Barrow Lodge

The annual Eigse Arts Festival commences this Friday.  Eigse is Ireland’s finest annual multi arts festival featuring an international acclaimed programme of visual art, theatre, dance, music, craft, comedy and family events.  This year Carlow is celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Eigse, and to celebate this great achievement, Barrow Lodge Bed and Breakfast are offering their customers a special rate of Euro 70 for a double or twin bed room, inclusive of breakfast for the duration of the festival.

Barrow Lodge is open again

The recession is over here in Barrow lodge.

Here in Barrow Lodge we have decided the recession is over.  We have had our share of doom and gloom for the past couple of months and we didn’t like it.  Well now all that is finished.   Summer is on the way, the sun is shining and all is well in our little world again.  We are still continuing with our price reduction of  70 euro for a double room inclusive of breakfast, but the RECESSION IS OVER, THANK GOD.   We are now in a pre boom period and hopefully we will have a bumper summer season.

Carlow Chamber of Commerce Computer Course

At present I am attending a computer course on blogging in Carlow Chamber of Commerce Gateway office on the Athy Road here in Carlow.  Hopefully I will learn something at it.  If I do you will see the benefits here
